Establishment of the Canterbury DEU model
The Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) model of clinical teaching and learning was established in Canterbury in 2007. It began as a partnership between two organisations, the Canterbury District Health Board and the education provider, Ara Institute of Canterbury (formerly CPIT). The DEU is based on an Australian model developed in the 1990's at Flinders University and offers an alternative to the traditional preceptorship model that focuses on student learning and curriculum integration. What started with 5 DEU's has now grown to 50 DEU's that cover 5 campuses and 76 clinical areas. It also includes the academic providers, University of Canterbury (UC) and University of Otago (UO).
